Banding from Hand: Why do we allow it when not specified?

I play a banding Enhancement.  I'm allowed to take a character from my hand to do this.  However, not all banding Enhancements say anything about the hand.  The default when there is no specification is, and always has been, in play.  Why do we allow this kind of banding to occur?  It seems to go against the norm and if we were to follow the targeting rules it seems like we would have to change the way we've played banding.

For what its worth, I think it would be a disaster if we weren't allowed to band from hand.
May you prosper greatly!

Hey,

Back in the day you could put characters from your hand into your territory during battle, and in fact you could play a banding card, put a hero from your hand into your territory, and then band to it.  So in that system there was no difference between banding from "in play" or banding from "hand or in play."  I imagine that when we tightened up the rules, eliminating the ability to put a character into play from hand during battle, we left the loose rules for banding and eventually defined the loose rules for banding as the default.

just play courage

and i dont think we should be able to band from hand if not stated. rules dictate in play is understood if not stated on card otherwise.

of course, here's what the REG say about it:

Instant Abilities > Band
Default Conditions
•      Banding cards that say “from your hand” mean add from your hand, those that say “in play” mean band from a territory, and those that have no specific indicator can be either.

This is the way Lackey gave it to me. All hail the power of Lackey!

Well, we can't add sites to battle from hand (only territory).  Why is banding different if "in play" is the default and the hand is not in play?

Hey,

just play courage

Interesting you should mention that card.  It was one that crossed my mind when I made my post.  Compare the two versions of courage and you'll probably see why.

That is an incorrect generalization not a rule.

By that line of thinking wouldn't it also hold the play an enhancement abilities should target an enhancement that is "in play?"  Is that really how you want things to be?

No.

Actually, I was more thinking that sites should be able to be added to battle from hand.... (Although the site lockout person inside me cries when I say that...)

The rules for banding specify that when the card doesn't mention, targets can be from hand or play. Idk why this is so hard to grasp. The default is to play, yes, but the REG SPECIFICALLY outlines that default rules for banding are different.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!
