Title: Real Rulings After-Quiz: Side Battles
Post by: Redoubter on April 13, 2015, 07:50:48 AM
Alright all, if you have not checked out the information on Land of Redemption (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-card-play/land-of-redemption-35687/), I highly recommend it.

Right now, the second installment of Real Rulings is up, so now it is time for a pop quiz.  If you watched the video, you should have the tools to solve this problem, even though it is more complicated:

In the Side Battle lesson (http://landofredemption.com/?p=464), when we have the "Battleception" with King Rehoboam in the third battle, what happens if he plays Midianite Attack?

Chaos . . . chaos is what happens.
Ok seriously though I'll give it a go. Keep in mind I've skimmed over the video once.
King Rehoboam plays Midianites attack which negates his own ability beginning a cascade negate of the second battle (the first side battle). However, the third side battle is the result of a cannot be negated enhancement. The second battle/first side battle will be discontinued and cards return to territory, however the third battle/second side battle continues because the cascade negate couldn't negate the card causing that side battle. Make sense? Probably not, I'll probably take a D on this quiz . . .
Oh, well that's my go.
Tell me how I did.

Alright...so Midianite Attack negates everything which would negate Sword against Sword which created the 3rd battle sending King Rehoboam back to the original battle and Leviathan back to territory. At that point the cascade would continue as King Rehoboam's ability to create the 2nd battle would be negated which would send AutO and Jair back to territory. The result would be Samuel in battle against King Rehoboam in a battle by the numbers. Right?

Combined, you two have the right answer, though Eragon5 was the one correct that the third battle (second side-battle) actually stays active!

Because Sword Against Sword is CBN when played on Jair (as noted in the video), it cannot be cascade negated.  That means that the second side-battle between Rehoboam and Leviathan continues, even though the first side battle is returned to original locations and 'never happened' due to cascade negation of Rehoboam (though CBI/CBN abilities are not undone).

uthminister added the last component we needed, that the original battle also continues as FBTN, based on when the ability completes.

Tricky question though, indeed.  If anyone has any other scenarios to consider, or any questions/concerns about the video, please feel free to post!

Better question - Why wouldn't you just play Samuel's Edict on Jair in that scenario?

Yes, I guess I didn't go that far since at that point in the battle, the side battle was going badly for Rehoboam and in the current state we are looking at battle resolution. However it still is an important detail that I overlooked, especially in the case of unknown nation. To be honest I'm surprised I got as much right as I did. Thanks for the brain teaser it was very entertaining! :D

Because you love side battles?

Because you love side battles?
And it's not CBN
