Rule proposal: "Type 2" closed deck

This is the idea:
1 starter deck
2 booster packs of choice
5 cards come from player (Must not be a promo, or anything above a rare)*
generic lost souls from player

*optional

Players may trade cards from booster packs for other players cards before the first round. This is the only time trading can happen during the tournament.
All rounds go by choice of tournament style. At the end of each round, the winner of the pair can "steal" 5 cards from the opponent that are not the cards that the player brought from outside the tournament. The player who lost the cards will receive them back at the end of the tournament.

Anyone have anything to add to it, or any flaws? For the "stealing", the cards will be marked down what cards were "stolen"

The "stealing" part I would not think is a good idea, as it will lead to confusion on who had what card, and losing a game will cripple you completely.

Otherwise, I'm up for looking into new ways to do closed decks, but what you described is basically Sealed Deck with cards brought in by the player.  I am not a fan of bringing outside cards into any closed category myself, but I'll wait to see what others think about that.

We then can change it to 1 card for a steal. The idea is either players use unique sleeves, or the card is marked down. Also, lets throw in a new card for everybody every round.

If the players use unique sleeves then in future games you'd be able to tell where your "stolen" card is in your deck and that might influence your game play which would technically be cheating. I don't really like the stealing idea and if anything I would think the loser should get to steal from the winner to even things out more. I've thought about playing with brought in cards before but I think it could be lop-sided towards the top players that have better cards to bring in when sealed deck is usually played because the decks are more evenly matched no matter who's playing. Now I realize 5 cards that can't be above rare shouldn't be too much of an issue but A. you have to make sure you know what's rare and what's not because the newer cards don't really have a specified rarity and B. I seem to like the randomness of the packs better anyway.

I like the stealing idea. We could also throw in "Loser gets a tat" as an optional, yet HIGHLY recommended, variant. How about we call it "Sealed deck Type 2,  then prison for you!"

Why give them back? You lose the game you lose the cards.

Ok then, complete loss of cards, include cards brought from home, and more. The only issue i can see with this is if there is enough people, you don't have enough cards to match up to a legal deck, so possibly cover this up with more booster packs, lets just do 1 pack per round (to recover from it slightly). Or we can have it somewhat a booster draft style to make sure the people who lost 5 cards get enough to recover

I feel like stealing of any kind (whether temporarily until the rounds end or permanently) goes against the basis of Redemption as a game for fun and fellowship.

Sure the idea worked in Yu-Gi-Oh! but I don't think it fits with Redemption. ::)

I would propose the following modifications: Most tournament hosts have large boxes of common/uncommon/lesser rare cards that they don't use/just give away to players that would be interested in them. Players could then take up to 5-10 cards from that box/collection to add to their decks. I also don't like the "stealing" idea, but I could envision something along the lines of a "forced trade", similar to the game Presidents and [Something Else...I haven't heard of any other board-approved names for the game]. Basically, in that game the winner of the round gets to take 2 cards from the loser of the round, and must also give that player 2 cards of his choice (usually his not-so-good ones). I would also limit the "forced trades" to non-Starter deck cards (from the Boosters or the "free box") and either limit the value of the "traded" cards to a certain value, or enforce "retrades" after the tourney.

I think it would be an interesting experiment for experienced players, but I wouldn't try it with new/inexperienced players who might be turned off by the stealing/forced trades.

Ok, so either one of 2 things: forced trade or perm steal. What about a "restart", meaning the player who lost has to go back to original deck style, or just simply 50 cards? and the winner gets the spares? Then the booster pack per player is done.

I will also add in the change of only bringing 1 card from home, and it can be any card you choose. Also exchangeable 1 card from home for a pack (if you wanted a certain card set, so up to 3 cards total from home) and disinclude this exchange for the in-between rounds packs. This will add more risk to losing your cards, so you either:
Make a extremely good deck

OR

Bring cards you don't really care that much for.

Just going to echo what was said earlier, that ante or anything like it resembles (or just is) gambling, and shouldn't be in Redemption.

ok then, what about instead, the winner gets to pick out 5 cards from the person he just played with per round (from the pack)? I just feel there should be a little bit of added risk. And to throw in, the person who lost gets to get not a full pack! But the rest of the pack is given to the winner of the round (added to the pack he/she gains for the round)!

Interesting concept, but I agree with some of the others on the "stealing". Not a fan of that. I could see this becoming really confusing/complicating for a host and taking too much time between rounds. He would basically have to recheck all the decks each time to make sure they are legal. Younger players would definitely not wakt to play this way. On the issue of gambling,  I can see some conflicts arising. However it is an interesting new version to look into.

You're right. We should probably stick to a mechanic already condoned in the game.  What if instead of stealing, we made the loser rip a few of his cards?

So the loser gets a tat, has to rip a card, has to drink Big Red and the tournament host gets a dominate of his choice from the winners deck? I think that could work!

Actually, what about an Ante card? a card someone is willing to risk, and the other person gets the card. OR the Ante (not put up by players) is a card or a few? Or even a pack! seems a bit better, added risk to added gain, but with no real loss to the person who lost the round. Maybe you can even Ante 1 card of choice from the 1 pack per round? Also, i think we should keep it to a 60 card limit, making it a bit better
