Once the Hero has entered battle and special ability completed, he has begun the battle. At this point, declare your intentions to make a rescue attempt or battle challenge.

Unless I am mistaken, you are allowed to delcare a battle challenge, even if you have lost souls available to rescue, right?

From the REG's Glossary:

Battle Challenge
A battle challenge may be given when there is no Lost Soul available for a Hero to rescue. A Hero is placed onto the Field of Battle, and the Evil Character is invited to fight. The battle challenge does not have to be accepted.

But you can start battle challenge if there are no lost souls and make a rescue attempt if one is put into play, if I am correct.

Yes, you are correct.  A BC can turn into a RA if a lost soul comes into play (same with a RA becoming a BC)

W@tW (TeP) and Seeker of the Lost are awesome for this. He has no lost souls but no evil characters to block (my friend) and I kept using seeker like 6 turns in a row to fish out souls. So awesome
