Frankly I don't think there is going to be an easy, clear-cut solution. With the number of cards spanning the number of years that they do and from the different stages of ruling evolution, there will always be something to throw a monkey wrench into the works.

That said, I think Redoubter's current definition is probably the best bet. It seems to clear up the most issues with the least amount of problems.
Just one more thing...

I thought we were looking for a more simplified definition.  I think the whole"Battle Phase" exclusion needs to go.  How bad would that make things?  IMO, the singular version of "opponent" should always refer to "any opponent." The plural version should continue as usual.

This would increase the versatility of the cards in MP where players occasionally need the ability to target players outside of battle, especially if the game is on the line.

I agree with this completely. As I mentioned earlier in the topic, this will only matter in Multi categories, and within those categories, it will allow individual players to have more of an active role shaping the game, which in my opinion will help make the categories better. One of the most frustrating things about Multi has always been when you lose a game due to circumstances that were completely out of your control.
