This came up in a tourney today where we had some different opinions. I want this to be clarified for the other party.

Scenario is I attack with a BF-protected John the Baptist, and the opponent blocks with a First-striking evil character. It is my understanding that since I am protected, the first strike means nothing. My opponent was under the impression that he couldn't lose unless I got my defense up, claiming that the FS was saving him from being defeated by the numbers. I don't understand where he's coming from, so I can't accurately present the case for his point of view

Confirmation please?

He was correct. The numbers in a mutual destuction situation mean nothing in the pesence of a first striking character. Even with protect abilites.

I'm confused on you wording there. How I interpret this is he can't kill you because you are protected and you can kill him if your numbers are higher regardless of first strike.

First Strike First strike is a special ability that keeps a character from being defeated in a mutual destruction situation. Playing a card with first strike ability does not prevent theopponent from continuing to play cards in battle. After all cards are played in the Field of Battle, a character with first strike defeats the opposing character if the character with first strike has strength equal to or greater than the opposing character’stoughness. However, if a character has first strike but has strength less than the opposing character’s toughness, then resolve the battle normally and disregard the first strike ability. If opposing characters in battle both have first strike ability, the character who gained it first takes precedence.

Master Q is correct. First strike allows the character with first strike to apply his strength (*/) prior to the opposing character during battle resolution. So in a mutual destruction situation the first strike character wins. However that does not take into account other abilities that can be applied, such as immunity, ignore and protection. If one character is protected from another, first strike won't matter because you're not allowed to harm the protected character. First strike is not a type of immunity that keeps the opposing character from harming the first strike character.
