Wording question

Eye On It - Place on your clay Hero: After this Hero makes a successful rescue or converts an Evil Character in battle, reveal top X cards of your deck; you may take one to hand and return each other card to the top or bottom of deck. Cannot be negated.

Does the evil character being converted have to be in battle, or does the conversion just have to happen during battle?

If I had to rule on it, I would say the EC has to be in battle, otherwise it would be more accurate to say "during battle". I am not sure if there are any similar situations that would make that interpretation unworkable, but if anyone thinks of any, feel free to post them here.
