Can opponent negate while he/she doesn't have ini?

Hi again,

we just faced a situation twice while playing starters at home with our younger daughter.

Following situation (maybe already asked somewhere - but search function isn't that powerful unfortunately):
  • Parmenas started a rescue attempt and is blocked by Unclean Spirit banded to Quirinius and Pilate's Soldiers.
  • Now a good convert enhancement is played on Parmenas to convert Quirinius to a Green Brigade hero
Question: Can oppenent now play Evil Strength on Unclean Spirit even though he/she doesnt have ini according to numbers? Or will Quirinius be converted an rescuer can continue to play GEs?

Thank you for a short clarification!

Bye

You cannot play enhancements during battle unless you have initiative. So no the blocker could not play Evil Strength in that situation since they are still winning the battle by the numbers (assuming I'm remembering all the involved characters' abilities correctly).

If Gamaliel's Speech or similar is in their territory, however, they would be able to activate the ability on that to negate an enhancement even if they don't have initiative (as long as it's not during the resolution of another card).

Initiative only affects enhancements played in battle.

Since the defender doesn't have initiative due to not losing by the numbers, or have special initiative since the defender's last evil character is being targeted for removal from battle, then Evil Strength cannot be played to stop the convert. The convert still happens and it is still Parmenas' initiative.

Update: I was writing this response while Browa had just replied, hence the duplication of an answer to the original question.
