When will the discard happen? As soon as I place the card on the evil character or after the battle? I'm assuming it won't take effect until after battle.

The discard takes place when the EC is converted after battle.

I'm pretty sure if it doesn't specify than the owner of sower gets to choose. I choose all the colors of the rainbow.

To be more clear: any convert card that does not specify a brigade (or does not specifically allow the holder to choose, like Holy Grail) will always convert to the brigade of the convert card.
