With Herod Temple, if some one plays a mass discard (eg AOCP), do I have to use the special for every single character to save them or just once to save the masses (thinking formal but wanted to double check)?

You have to do it for each character

No matter how many tuxes your characters are playing, you've still got to use it for each character.
