So the article talks like Saul has to be in battle alone to toss, but the ability reads basically Saul can band to a character of his color or toss.  So I see nothing that says Gomer (or really pick you favorite) bands to Saul then Saul can't chose to band or toss, as now his ability activates and has no additional clarification that he has to be alone to toss.  Not sure that was the intention but that is how I read it!

Nice catch--a previous version of King Saul required he be the lone blocker and I forgot we changed that after some discussion.
