Music Leader/Philip's Daughters

I have Music Leader in play.  My opponent attacks with Philip's Daughters.  Can I use ML's ability?

Music Leader - If an opponent uses a draw or search ability (except on a musician), you may search deck or discard pile for up to 2 good cards that involve music.

Philip's Daughters - Reveal and underdeck 4 random cards from opponent’s hand. Opponent must draw an equal number of cards. Cannot be negated.

Yes. Daughters is still a draw ability even though the opponent is the one drawing.

Is the second ability contingent on the first for PD? As in, would ML still fire if the player attacking with PD could not reveal any cards, i.e. the opponent's hand is protected?
Just one more thing...

I would rule yes because the draw ability still fires even if "an equal number" is 0.

This is not an official ruling but I could also see a valid interpretation being that "equal number" is actually "null" and therefore there was no draw ability used.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

My thinking was that we already have precedent for actions taking place on a sum total of 0 cards (ala Sinning Hand's negate).

Right, but that would be the case if I used PD when my opponent had no cards in hand (where 0 cards are revealed and thus 0 drawn). But the protected hand means I cannot target the hand in order to determine the "equal number."

Wouldn't it be the same end result because of the "do as much as you can" principle? You cannot target the hand for the underdeck, so 0 cards were underdecked, and the draw ability fires with the 0 amount. It's not a cost benefit, it's a related but additional ability, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't trigger even if the first ability fizzles.

I mean I guess either way could work, but I think it's clearer/simpler to have it default to "0" rather than "null."

If the opponent has Music Leader and Hezekiah's Signet Ring (for some reason) and I play a mandatory search that targets draw or discard I don't get to search because HSR restricts me but since it's mandatory it still fires and I've still "used" the ability haven't I? It really depends on the definition of "using an ability", whether it's simply triggering the ability even if it fizzles for various reasons or whether the ability has to successfully carry out some sort of effect.
