I make a rescue attempt and my opponent uses gomer to band to my Wandering Spirit. He then immediately plays Grapes on my Wandering Spirit. Is Wandering Spirit discarded?

I would say yes it goes to the discard pile.

The above are correct. It's a good way to get rid of an opponent's WS, and I have used it before.
