A situation like this came up in a game recently. I'm curious to see how others will resolve it.

The rescuing player control Musician (clay/white), Cornelius (clay/red) and Barnabas (clay/green), so 4 brigades in total. Rescuing with Barnabas, he chooses the Punisher Lost Soul to put into play. What happens?

Barnabas - Protect N.T. Lost Souls and clay Heroes from Pharisees, Sadducees and Heretics. May band to Mark. Search opponent's deck for a Lost Soul. Cannot be prevented.

Lost Soul (Jeremiah 17:9) (punisher) - Negate Hero special abilities of any opponent with more than three good brigades in play.

Is it not like banding a character into battle that negates the banding?

That's my assumption and how we played it. But I've never actually heard that logic applied to anything other than FBTN Heroes. I tried to look up that rule for reference but I can't find it written anywhere.

I believe Kram would be correct, the LS would negate Barny's search, putting itself back into the draw pile, but since you can't negate yourself, even indirectly, the negate would persist until the end of the phase.
Just one more thing...

But wouldn't Barnabas then have indirectly negated himself, which shouldn't be allowed?

But wouldn't Barnabas then have indirectly negated himself, which shouldn't be allowed?

Barnabas didn't negate himself, he was negated because he brought a card into play that negated his ability. The other card did the negating, not Barny.

If you can't negate yourself, what about Trembling Demon?

And Kram that is a tricky one, but it works because the negate is paired with an instead ability and thus isn't negating his own ability so much as replacing it with an ability that does nothing.

Barnabas didn't negate himself, he was negated because he brought a card into play that negated his ability.
Bringing in a card that negates yourself would be indirectly negating yourself, no? If not, exactly how is that not indirectly negating yourself?

This situation is exactly like a hero banding to a FBTN hero who negates the band ability (Armorbearer-Benaiah, etc.).  The ability that added the negating card to play is negated, but the negate "sticks". 

So in this case, Barnabas is completely negated, which undoes the search for the Punisher LS, and the Punisher LS' negate remains ongoing for the remainder of the phase.
