Household Idols/Mary Mother of James/Garden Tomb

Household Idols:  Artifact  SA:  Heroes may not band.  Good banding cards have no effect

Mary Mother of James (MMOJ):  White GC 7/6, SA:  May band to Salome, Mary Magdalene and/or Joanna. Cannot be negated if The Garden Tomb is in play.

The Garden Tomb (TGT):  Fortress  SA:  If opponent has a Redeemed Soul, then Salome, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Peter, John and Mary the Mother of James ignore all evil brigades that do not have at least two Characters in play.

Question:  Does Household Idols prevent Mary Mother of James from Banding to Salome, Mary Magdalene and/or Joanna if The Garden Tomb is in play?

additionally:  I have MMOJ and Salome in my territory. My opponent has TGT in his territory, but mine hasn't come out yet.  Can my hero's use MMOJ's CBN banding status because his TGT is in play and use the ignore ability from his TGT against his EC's during a rescue attempt?

Thanks!

Hey,

Does Household Idols prevent Mary Mother of James from Banding to Salome, Mary Magdalene and/or Joanna if The Garden Tomb is in play?

Mary Mother of James cannot even enter battle while Household Idols is active (it's ignoring her).  So technically it doesn't prevent her banding ability, but it does keep her banding ability from working.

The cannot be negated ability on Mary Mother of James doesn't care who The Garden Tomb belongs to, just that it is in play, so an opponent's TGT would make her banding unnegateable.

The ignoring benefit of The Garden Tomb applies to all Garden Tomb heroes regardless of which player controls them, so yes your characters can ignore his evil characters because of his The Garden Tomb.  Be careful though, the condition (that the opponent must have a redeemed soul) is from the perspective of the player with The Garden Tomb even if it's being used against them, so to use your opponents The Garden Tomb to ignore you have to have a redeemed soul to satisfy the condition.

Ok, I can understand MMoJ not being able to band, but why can't she even enter battle?  Her SA says MAY band, not MUST band, so couldn't she enter battle and make an RA by herself without using her banding ability?

Any character who has the potential to band is considered a banding card. Household Idols ignores banding cards, which means banding cards cannot enter battle when HHI is active.

Am I hearing this right?

Any hero with a special ability that says "May band" cannot even enter battle by themself?  So does Wool Fleece do the same thing and prevent a "May band" EC from blocking by themself?

The REG says Wool Fleece is a prevent. Which is good, imo. Demons have enough to worry about.

Thanks, but this makes little sense to me.  It makes sense that I may not band.  But what is the justification for me not being able to enter battle by myself?

Household Idols has a "Play As" in the REG:

Household Idols
Type: Artifact • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Heroes may not band. Good banding cards have no effect. • Play As: Banding of Heroes is prevented. Good banding cards are ignored. • Identifiers: NT, Depicts an Idol, False Religious Practice • Verse: I Corinthians 12:2 • Availability: Apostles booster packs (Ultra Rare)

The "ignore" ability in the "Play As" is what is causing the hero to not even enter battle. Wool Fleece is only a prevent, not a prevent and ignore. Household Idols is much more powerful.

So is a good banding card anything that mentions banding at all?  Specifically, is COTH a good banding card?

a banding card is a card that can perform the action of banding. coth is not a banding card.

If it's any consolation, any card that targets an idol can target Household Idols.  ;D

This seems highly inconsistent....

It doesn't really maker sense that HHI and Wool Fleece would be treated differently (especially with the evil one being more powerful knowing Redemption's mantra of giving the good side more powerful cards). Why is one treated as merely a prevent and the other as a prevent and ignore? "Good banding cards have no effect" seems more like clarifying text than an ignore effect to me because entering battle isn't an "effect".

HHI is worded the way it is because it is an older card. The "has no effect" was (at least most likely was IMO) clarifying text, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) the clarifying text took the form of an already standard version of ignore (have/has no effect) so it was determined that the "clarifying text" was actually an additional ability. Errata is typically only given to cards that either are too powerful so as to lead to game-breaking combos (A New Beginning, Holy Grail) or cards that don't make sense with their wording. Unintended consequences of poor/outdated wording will usually not result in errata.
