Author Topic: OK, when exactly can an EC in battle play a negate again? (Read 1404 times)

Scenarios: (All of these assume that the hero's enhancement is not CBN).

1) Hero plays an enhancement directly targeting the EC that is blocking them that would remove the EC from the battle, like Capture, Return to hand/deck, Shuffle, Discard, Remove from Game, etc. Can the EC play an interrupt/negate to stop this from happening? (Pretty sure the answer is Yes.)

2) Hero play an enhancement granting them immunity. Can the EC play a negate or an interrupt to stop that immunity?

3) Hero plays an Ignore enhancement in battle. Can the EC play a negate or interrupt to stop that ignore card?

4) Hero plays a "choose the blocker" enhancement in battle (like Obedience of Noah) to replace my EC(s) with one of their own. Can my EC's play a negate or interrupt at that point, by nature of us being removed from battle?

5) Hero plays a "Negate all special abilities" enhancement (like Blessings). Can the EC play a negate or interrupt to stop that ability from happening? (Pretty sure the answer to this one is "No")

Thanks for your help. I know its a shock, but we actually had some Non-CBN BATTLES this weekend, and it was like some people had forgotten how to play negates

REG on initiative:

A player with initiative may play the next enhancement. Initiative is always given to the player who is losing the current battle. The losing player cannot pass initiative.

1. Yes. The EC receives special initiative to play an interrupt/negate.
2. Yes. Immunity always results in either a stalemate or the non-immune side losing, and initiative passes in both cases.
3. Yes. Ignore causes the character(s) being ignored to lose the battle so initiative is given to them. This is different from the initiative in #1 in that until if/when you negate/interrupt the ignore the ignored character(s) has infinite initiative (they can continue playing whatever enhancements they want without initiative ever passing to the ignoring character).
4. I believe the answer is yes, you could play an interrupt/negate on the character(s) being kicked out of battle. Not 100% sure, though.
5. Maybe. The only interrupt/negate you could play in that situation is one that is itself CBP or CBN. Otherwise, the special ability of your interrupt/negate is prevented before it can activate.

Red Wing and browarod are correct except on #4.

You only have initiative to play a negate if you regularly have initiative after the new Evil Character enters battle.

For example, Silas (4/4 Blue Hero, no SA) is blocked by Red Dragon (10/10 Crimson EC, no SA). Silas plays Obedience of Noah (1/1 CtB) and chooses Beast from the Sea (10/10 Pale Green EC, no SA) to block. In this scenario, the player defending does not have a chance to play a negate since the defending player is still "winning" the battle after the new blocker is presented. So if the rescuing player followed Obedience of Noah with a battle winner against Beast from the Sea, the defending player would have to negate with a Pale Green enhancement.

Yeah, #4 was the point of contention over the weekend.

Obedience of Noah was played in battle to replace my banded chain of about 4 ECs with his 1/1 Crimson EC (knowing that I didn't have a crimson defense). My thoughts were that because my ECs were being removed from battle that I would have initiative to play an orange "interrupt the battle" or "negate an enhancement card" before that happens. My opponent thought that I wouldn't have a chance to do that because the ability completes first, and now I only have a crimson EC in battle and no crimson interrupts. I told him that it doesn't work that way on anything else though, like when you attempt to discard my EC, he doesn't go to the discard pile, and now I have no EC to play a negate on. I feel the playing of enhancements like that pass initiative to the opponent to determine if they can interrupt or negate it, and if they can't, THEN it happens. (If it doesn't work this way then "choose the blocker" is vastly overpowered!)

So if I hear you correctly, I WOULD have initiative to play my orange enhancement IF he is attempting to replace my banded guys with a 1/1 guy, causing me to lose the battle? But if he was 7/7, and replaced my banding chain with a 10/10 EC (regardless of color), then I would not have initiative to negate it yet because I'm still winning the battle. Is this right?
