This is the way Lackey gave it to me. All hail the power of Lackey!

Yes, if he plays by the letter of the REG, No if he understands the spirit of the game.

Hey,

Yes, if he plays by the letter of the REG, No if he understands the spirit of the game.

I'm curious to know what letter (or sequence of letters) in the REG that conclusion comes from.

It's actually a rather moot point, even if he does decline that doesn't stop you from adding the access site to battle at which point it becomes a rescue attempt and he can then change his mind as far as his decision to decline.

In type two though can this same scenario happen? I agree with you in type 1 but I think it'd be different in type 2.

Quote from: REG > Redemption Rulebook > Diagram of a Turn > Battle Phase > Access to a Site
Access to a Site
To rescue a Lost Soul in a site, a Hero must have access to the site. If a Hero does not have access to a Lost Soul, then the battle is a battle challenge. A Hero has access to a site if:

1.  the Hero’s icon box contains a matching brigade color in the icon box of the site, or

2.  a special ability gives the Hero access to the site, or

3.  An unoccupied site is placed in battle with the Hero and the icon box on the unoccupied site contains a matching brigade color in the icon box of the occupied site. The unoccupied site can be added at any time during the battle, but it must come from the player’s territory. If the Hero is defeated in battle, the site returns to the owner’s territory. The special ability on a multi-colored site is active only when the site is in battle and being used to give a Hero access to a site.

If you're adding a site into battle to gain access, it's still during the battle and the defender still has a chance to actually defend.

doesn't the battle end when he declines though?

No. It was thought for a time that you could start a battle challenge, have your opponent decline, then you could use Harvest Time to rescue a free soul since your opponent declined. However, there is something in the REG that says you can change your mind if the state of the battle changes (like in that case) so that your opponent can choose to block if it becomes an RA.

What could happen is a player goes in for a rescue without site access, and has access to exactly one Lost Soul, with all other LS's in sites. The opponent could bury the LS and decline the battle challenge. Then you can put in your access site and continue with an RA, and your opponent could block.

I agree with Sir Nobody and Prof.
Fortress Alstad
Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Upon starting the battle phase the player must declare whether he is making a rescue attempt or battle challenge. If all lost souls are in sites and there is an access card, yet the player says, battle challenge, then I would say the blocking player can deny that, and that's that. If the player states rescue attempt, he would have to add his access when his hero goes into battle. Now let's say there is a lost soul out of site at the beginning of battle phase and the player states a rescue attempt and does not need his access site, yet during the battle land purchase or building egypt is played and thus making it a battle challenge, this is when an access site can be added into battle.

+1 This is the way that it should be....go like you are going for a soul..  If you decide not to then declining should be an option

I also think that the rules should reflect this line of thinking...however it does not.

i attack with no access. you decline. i add access from territory. why not from hand though?

Because cards in your hand are out of play.

To me this answer really doesn't explain anything, but every time I ask a question along the lines of "why not from hand though?" I get this answer so I thought I would try it out on you.  ;)

Well, here's the REG- why does it have to be from territory? Why can't you add a site from hand?

Because the REG says so...

No seriously though: the only cards that are allowed to be put down on the table during battle, excepting by use of a special ability, are characters, enhancements, dominants, and drawn lost souls. This has always been the way it is. Would I be able to put down my Herod's Dungeon down during a battle to use defensively? Probably not. It's probably better just to leave things the way they are and have been for awhile.

Because as I said, we don't allow anything else to be put down during battle except the cards I mentioned. If I drew a bunch of cards during battle, and had way more than 10 in hand, and then my opponent drew the Speed Bump LS, I am not allowed to start putting sites, forts or artifacts down into territory to reduce my hand size. If we allow access sites to be put down, why not other sites, which may have an effect on the battle (like my Herod's Dungeon example)? Why not fortresses? I think having only a limited number of things able to happen during battle is a good thing, and I'm sure the rule makers do too.
