I have been out of the game for a little while, am getting back into it. Is it true you cannot rescue your own lost souls with SOG/NJ? Can someone point to where/when this change happened?

Hey, welcome back to the game! Yes Lost Souls in your Land of Bondage are protected from rescue by you. I'm not sure exactly when the rule change happened- it was before I started playing which was around 2014.

     There is a thread that Bryon started in Sept. 2011 that has the discussion and a poll about changes to SoG/NJ. The I&J starter debuted the new SoG "Negate and rescue a Lost Soul". I believe the "you can only rescue lost souls from your opponent" was implemented around the same time.
     The rule can be found in the REG under Rescue.
(the 2/3 Liner Lost Soul has been banned also)

I seem to recall that it happened not long after I started playing, which would put it right around 2010/11.

That ruling was put in play because the 2 liner, female only, SoG/NJ and Burial sometimes made it impossible, or extremely difficult to get to 5. The fact that SoG can not rescue any lost soul was a heated debate because of the NT only and female only so the new SoG came out to fix that issue. Then rescuing your own went away to improve gameplay. Burial, SoG/NJ out of 7 lost souls leaves your opponent only 4 to rescue before soul generation was really a thing, only harvest time was available/used. So this ruling enhanced gameplay, IMO, and was the reasoning behind the change.
