The original thread seems to have been lost in the purge, but Gabe makes a reference to the ruling on the first page.

Yeah even though most (if not all) offerings in those days had to do with burning them, I believe it is more of a "if we make this an offering it could easily be broken thing" more than not being an acutally offering.  Some times things could go either way, I say error on the side of lets not have a broken combo.
