Miriam a Musican?

And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
  -- Exodus 15:20-21

Miriam played a musical instrument to lead the women of Isreal in musical worship.

This would make Miriam a musician, would it not?

Hey,

The REG lists Miriam as a Prophet. There is no listing that Miriam is a Musician.

Blessings,

I already thought she was.  Didn't this get asked a long time ago?

I saw the same question asked about Moses--also using Exodus 15--but there was never a clear consensus one way or another on that question.  Miriam is a bit different because where Moses sang with all the people of Israel, Miriam used an instrument to lead others in worship.

i know everyone was getting into the discusion about moses.... but coming from a guy who uses gold brigade, i dont think that miriam should be considered anything other than a hero...there may be a little bias there...say hello to my christian martyr.

tell me why is miriam a musician? moses tought the  slaves a song does that make him a musician?...

the only diferance is that she just used instruments he used his voice.
Colloquially, if you were standing next to me in the congregation singing during worship, I wouldn't call you a musician. If, however, you went up front, grabbed an instrument, started playing it, and lead the congregation in worship I probably would consider you to be a musician.

I agree.  The definitely of musician (or music inspired) is pretty broad.  That verse seems to suggest that Miriam knew more music than just singing.

Colloquially...

Wasn't there an Errata on the message boards about using words that those of us from Oklahoma can't pronounce? I can't find anywhere where Miriam sold Coloaks or Coats? :P

Doesn't she have as much recorded in the scriptures about her musical contributions as anyone? She 'should' be a musician even if she doesn't grab the Microphone at Matt's Church...The Church of the First Colloqui..or something.

I never play with the musicians them in any of my decks so what I have to say really isn't bias, but I would strongly the support of Miriam as a musician.  I really see her in many ways as the worship leader for the nation of Israel as they were leaving Egypt.  Playing an instrument and leading in singing is what my definition would be for a musician.
I never want to grow up, hmmm maybe thats why I'm a youth pastor.

David is a musician, and he (1) played an instrument, and (2) sang either in the fields (alone) or for King Saul (audience).  Miriam seems to have done both in one way or another, and even lead them (I don't remember David ever leading worship).  Seems clear to me to the qualifies.

David is also a musician because a large amount of the psalms are attributed to him.

Hey,

I don't follow definitions for identifiers all that closely, but I believe the working definition of "musician" requires that the individual's occupation/profession must be creating music.  As such I'm pretty sure Miriam would not apply.  There is a looser definition of musician that could be used to incorporate a good number of other characters into the musician's theme, but that would make the theme a splash theme rather than a white theme, so I imagine it is not the sort of thing the playtesters are inclined to do.

Yeah I have to agree with SirNobody that the playtesters will prolly vote no on this though I think she  could be a "musician".

I talked with Steve Braun about this yesterday (he used a White/Green musician theme deck with David and Miriam).

Miriam played a musical instrument and used music to lead people in praise (an event described on the Praise card, an enhancement classified as "involving music"). She wasn't in a band, but neither was David (who is listed as a musician).

Biblically, I think she was clearly a musician. Game wise, it helps musicians because they get a female hero, and it's not like they're exactly over-powered right now any way.

I agree with those who say that Miriam should be a musician. I find it humorous that the illustration used for Miriam has her playing a musical instrument. Clearly that is what she is most well known for, Biblically speaking.

I actually don't have Miriam in my deck, but if she was ruled a musician she would definitely go in.

If the standard is "profession is musician," then while David counts, King David should not, since he had left the musical profession. If you count King David because he wrote psalms, then what about Solomon, who wrote 1,005 songs (1 Kings 4:32)?

In my opinion as a musician, Bible student/pastor, and Redemption player, Miriam, King David, and King Solomon should all be counted as musicians. I'd be OK with Moses being left out, since Miriam was apparently the "worship leader" to his "senior pastor."

STAMP, I'm not sure how a card showing Miriam bopping a jelly fish on the noggin is related to the question on whether she is a musician or not. It does raise the questions of where she found a jelly fish--maybe from the Red Sea--and why she seems to be so happy about jelly fish noggin-bopping.  ;)

The prophet definition includes more than those who were prophets by trade.  I figured the musician definition was similarly broad.  I was under the impression that those who wrote/lead songs would qualify as musicians.  That would include both Miriam and Moses and Deborah and Barak (who wrote/lead songs), in addition to David (who was employed as a musician).

I take this as official, until instructed otherwise. :preach:

How about Solomon? He fits the broad definition, too.

So, between this thread and the one on Solomon/Lemuel, in addition to the white musicians and Davids it would be safe to say these are the musicians currently in Redemption:

Miriam
Moses
Deborah
Barak
King Solomon

That gives 3 gold, 2 green, 2 red, and 2 purple musicians, enough to allow quite a few options for musician decks.

Can I get a "hallelujah"?
