does end of battle mean end of battle phase? for example, if I played Prosperity in a side battle, once the side battle is resolved, do I have to put cards back on top immediatly? or can I wait until my evil characters are done?

Since each battle is separate, the "end of battle" for a Prosperity played in a side battle is at the end that side battle.

on a side note, Book of Hozai says during Discard Phase. would that be his discard phase? or would it continue to carry over to my turn? or would it just stop working?

The player of Book of Hozai would return the cards during his next discard phase. So if you play it on your opponent's turn, you get to hold on to the extra cards until the end of your own turn.
