Title: Lost Soul requirements

Is there a max? Is there a such thing as having too many lost souls? For example, 24 lost souls in a 56 card deck?

Yes.  You can only have the required number, no more, no less.  (The hopper is an exception)

Correct. Although you can have a 57-card deck with 8 LS's if you so choose.
