Ok, more questions:
Lazarus. When he's discarded and the rescue attempt fails, you get to grab a convert Enhancement from your discard pile and start another battle, blah blah blah.
Does this activate in the discard pile, or does it not rather happen as he is being discarded? Subsequently, can this ability be negated during battle, as by Sapphira, or can it not, as it is activated AFTER battle?

If his ability is negated it cannot take affect later in the battle.

But that's what I'm asking... IS it in the battle? It seems to activate AFTER the battle based on resolution.

...or is it like this?
Because the abilities of characters activate in battle, does that mean that it goes off when Lazarus enters battle but more or less just acts like a condition saying that, in the event that Lazarus loses the battle and gets discarded, you will be able to take the Enhancement and start a new battle?
In other words, it DOES activate during battle, and can thus be negated during battle, but only ever actually does something if, AFTER the battle, Lazarus loses and gets discarded.
Is that right?

Like all character abilities, it activates when the character is put into battle. Like all ongoing abilities with a delayed condition or trigger, if it is negated before the condition is met, the rest of the ability does not happen.

Ok, well put. Not delayed ACTIVATION, delayed TRIGGER.
That makes sense. As always, thanks, Redoubter.

One quick note: Lazarus cannot be negated after a new battle has begun. This is because whenever a new battle starts in a turn (be it from Lazarus, Grapes of Wrath, or anything else), it begins a new battle phase. Because abilities can only be negated in the phase they occur in, Lazarus cannot be negated if a new battle begins.

Unless, of course, he's being negated by something else.
Nice clarification, Chris. Thank you.
