Lacking Sleep

Lacking Sleep (errata): "Hero decreases 1/1 each turn until */1.  While hero who is Lacking Sleep is in battle, player must allow the opponent to play the first enhancement in battle.  Treat as a disease."

If I use Lacking Sleep and put it on AutO, who in a later battle enters/swaps out, do I get to play the first enhancement for that battle?  The hero with Lacking Sleep was in battle, but they aren't by the time I can put an EC (and then be able to play an enhancement); pretty sure since it says "while" that I'm out of luck, but figured I'd ask.

Also, would protection (like from AutO onto Gideon), given in a battle not in the same turn as Lacking Sleep being played, protect the character?  The REG says the character is now identified as "Diseased", so does the harmful effect come from Lacking Sleep or from the character that is diseased (essentially, does the ability get transferred, provided the enhancement doesn't say "while this remains")?

And how does AutO's protection on Gideon affect a poison from a previous turn?  E.g. I poison Gideon on a turn when AutO has not been in battle.  On my opponent's upkeep, Gideon drops 0/2.  They then AutO->Gideon.  Is the drop permanent (until reset by hand or draw/discard piles)?  Does the poison stay through the battle despite the protection, or is the poison card and identifier removed?

Protection doesn't erase effects persisting on a character, it just prevents those effects from advancing while the protection remains. So, Gideon poisoned/diseased while not protected would continue to be affected by those effects during phases other than the battle phase. If he's supposed to lose 0/2 per turn, he does so because that happens in Upkeep. He would retain the reduced numbers in battle even while protected because protection doesn't negate the decreases.

In regards to the second question, I believe that Gideon would still grant the blocker first enhancement even if he's protected as that part of Lacking Sleep doesn't target Gideon, it targets the player that blocks him.

In regards to the first question, I'm not 100% sure but I believe Lacking Sleep would not grant the blocker the first enhancement unless AuTO is in battle when the blocker is presented, due to the while wording.

I didn't think #1 would work, but figured it was worth asking.  Thanks for the clarifications :)
