Grapes of Wrath:
Discard an evil card in battle to shuffle all remaining characters in battle into owners’ decks. If the current rescuer doesn't have the most Redeemed Souls, he may begin a new battle.

Is there a current rescuer during a battle challenge?  Does it make a difference if it was an RA at some point?  What about a side battle?

Edit - Is there a current rescuer if the hero(es) were discarded (CM, Wrath, etc.), but there are still ECs in battle?

Not sure if we ruled it right, but at today's tournament a player made a rescue with Ehud and chose the blocker. Blocking player played Christian Martyr instead of giving up initiative, and the attacking player then played Grapes on the EC. We said that still granted a new rescue attempt. Fortunately it did not change the game outcome except for a 1 LS difference, but definitely a good question to consider.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Hey,

The rescuer is the player, so even if there are no heroes left in battle there is still a current rescuer.

You can't have a current rescuer without a current rescue attempt, so during a battle challenge or side battle there is no current rescuer.

How can you have a rescue attempt with no heroes in battle?  Those two lines seem contradictory on that point.

If rescuer requires there to be a rescue attempt, how does Death & Hades (Reduce opponent's hand to 7 cards until this character is discarded (or 9 cards if rescuer has Tables of the Law activated).) work if used when the opponent makes a BC?

The key word for "Rescue Attempt" would be "attempt." When the heroes are all gone, then the "attempt" is not going so well, but it is still an "attempt."

With regard to Death & Hades, we all know about old wording.  ;)  Although, I guess hosts will just have to rule that if D&H blocks a Battle Challenge, then his ability overrides Tables of the Law.  ;D

I haven't seen anyone over 9 years old use either D&H of TotL for...ever. :P So I don't think it matters much. ;)

Hey,

How can you have a rescue attempt with no heroes in battle?  Those two lines seem contradictory on that point.

A battle (i.e. rescue attempt) ends when both players agree it is over, not when one side of the battle is void of characters.  Usually when one side of battle has no characters the next thing that happens is the battle ends, but that is not always the case.

I know that - I was really asking how it was still a rescue attempt when there was no access in battle.  YMT's answer made enough sense, but it raises this question: Is there a current rescuer if the battle goes from RA to BC to no heroes in battle?

If you are in a rescue attempt and you lose access to all available lost souls in your opponent's Land of Bondage, then the battle becomes a battle challenge.  In that case, there would be no current rescuer, and therefore another attempt would not begin.
The most profound thing I have learned in gaming, if you are not losing, your opponent isn't winning
