Title: Job
Post by: Minister Polarius on October 13, 2010, 06:09:02 PM
Is Job protected from Discard (and Capture Abilities), or (Discard and Capture) abilities?

I was wondering that myself while looking at the card recently. He did come out with Priests, which is exactly when Abiathar came out:

Abiathar (Pi)
Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Teal • Ability: 5 / 4 • Class: None • Special Ability: Protect this Hero from discard abilities and remove from game abilities. Cannot be interrupted. • Identifiers: OT Male Human, Tabernacle High Priest (House of Ithamar) • Verse: I Samuel 22:20-23 • Availability: Priests booster packs (Uncommon)

So I'd almost have to rule that, in the rare case that Job would be discarded by the numbers, he would return to territory, much like Enoch or Simeon. Intriguing.

I would rule it to be protection from abilities, not numbers.

Why? If it doesn't say abilities, it's more broad of a protect. It's like cards vs abilities, except this includes gamerule.

I agree. If he is protected from Discard and (capture abilities), then he is protected from all discard, and capture abilities. If he is protected from discard abilities and capture abilities, then CM and the like won't affect him, but he can be discard in a FBTN.

I agree with the "Other Prof".  If these cards came out in the same set, and one put the word "abilities" twice, and the other didn't, then I have to assume that they were meant to be different.  Therefore, I would also rule that the correct interpretation would be that Job is protected from discard and (capture abilities).

Just keep in mind that neither of the Profs were elders when Priests came out, so one of the veteran playtesters may overrule us. Something tells me Justin might come on and rule otherwise just out of spite; he hates Job.  ;)

Job (Pi)
Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Blue • Ability: 6 / 12 • Class: None • Special Ability: Protect Job from discard and capture abilities. • Identifiers: OT Male Human • Verse: Job 2:3 • Availability: Priests booster packs (Rare)

Enoch (Pa)
Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: White • Ability: 7 / 8 • Class: None • Special Ability: Enoch may be removed from the game, but is prevented from being discarded. • Errata: Protect Enoch from discard. • Identifiers: OT Male Human, Prophet • Verse: Genesis 5:23-24 • Availability: Patriarchs booster packs (Rare)

Hmm, I'm not sure about this one. I can see both points... that Ithmar says abilities twice, but Job does not.

Very true.  We were just young whipper-snappers back then :)

If Job were written today, he'd say either:

Protect Job from capture and discard abilities.

or

Protect Job from capture abilities and discard.

I honestly don't remember the intent, but the second interpretation is fine with me.

It's not so much Job that irks me as Dust and Ashes...

Going with this interpretation doesn't really matter since anyone using Job is using D&A anyway so the outcome is virtually the same...

Job gets blocked by Leviathan. Lives. Biblical accuracy ftw! <--not sarcasm

Shouldn't the Leviathan defeat Job tho since God pointed to it as something far more powerful than man?

i heard recently that the term leviathan is often used to refer to Satan....  i wasn't aware of it. Has anyone else heard that?

Nope. That's interesting though, considering Leviathan/Satan is quite possibly the most fearsome foe to man (except God, of course, but I'm not his enemy).

The Leviathan is not Satan. The Leviathan is sometimes a metaphor for Satan.
