I looked at the REG on this, but the "Play as" also says the tear the card "IN HALF".

If this is played and ripped against me in a tournament, can I call for a measurement when it is played against me to see if one section of the card is larger than the other?  The word "half" implies two sections of equal size, as opposed to just a simple "divide this card in two" or "destroy this card".  I doubt I'm the first one to think of this, but I couldn't find any discussion of the phrase "tear the card IN HALF" anywhere else.  I'm not implying I'd be brave enough to actually TRY this, but I'd be curious to hear why the player of HP can't instead snip a sliver off the corner of the card, if we do not strictly require it to be torn "in half".

Please don't hate me for getting technical and asking the question.  I just wonder where the line between literal interpretation and granting a lot of latitude falls in regard to this card.

Does it matter? The card is no longer legal...and I will never play you in person if you call a measurement on me... :)

Then you would not mind if the person who played it only snipped off a corner (to preserve their ability to use the card in casual play later on)?

Of course I would mind. That isn't tearing the card in half.

If my opinion counts, I think "half" should just be "through the width of the card, through the picture, leaving two corners on each piece remaining"

Yeah. A question came up about something like that at Nats about Angry Mobs. I believe it was Andrew, if I'm not mistaken that said that angry mobs doesn't flip them back face up so they remain out of play. I thought it was funny at first then i was like oug. Loophole!!! XD

My son Robert actually tried to pull this off in a casual game a few years ago. He claimed that his opponent couldn't use the SA because, as he held the pieces together against each other, it was obvious that the parts were not equal so the card was not torn in half. His opponent disagreed and went ahead and carried out the SA anyway.

"So what?" you may ask.

Other obnoxious teenagers have tried that, I'm sure.

BUT....

He was playing Rob Anderson. :rollin:

That was me actually. MJB had the origional idea.

Also, Keith Bartram used to fold his Plot's to get as clean and exact rip as possible.

I once tried to convince Bryon the word "tear" meant Kurt had to cry and cause the card to dissolve in half.  It didn't work.

Let me maybe alleviate some concerns here.  Someone once said that the best way to illustrate absurdity is by being absurd.  I think it is silly that we have a card in this game that requires it to be torn in half.  I will never use this card myself because of this ability, but by not using it I am at a disadvantage.  I have also heard of or witnessed too many games, for a bible game, being decided by a loophole or rules technicality, so I wish it would stop.

So I do seriously ask this question for two reasons - 1)  Why can't the owner just cut their card in such a way that it is not tournament legal anymore, but would still work for casual play?, and 2)  For the rules gurus out there who sometimes win on technicalities against less experienced players, why doesn't it work the same when playing this card?  I've heard of players ripping it SEVERAL times into little pieces, and I've witnessed rips that were more 70/30 than 50/50.  Why are both of these presumed "legal" plays of this card?  If this has come up before, then I'm surprised the "Play as" has not been updated to "Divide the card into two pieces" or "Tear the card."

Thanks again.

Hey,

Apparently you missed the line in the tournament guide that says "all measurements are rounded to the nearest half card" :)
