Herod's Praetorium:

"...Protect your Herods from opponents' band abilities..."

How does this function?

If I was attacked by Sam-King Saul-David the Shepherd and I blocked with a Herod what would happen?

Protected from banded is confusing...

I think it would protect Herods from being banded into battle by the opponent. It doesn't say anything about being protected from heroes that are banding. I'm not completely sure though.
