Yes. Protection includes numbers.

To answer your other question, if the numbers are such that Gideon is not killing them as well (that is, they have > 6 toughness) then initiative can pass per normal.

Protection just means you can't die, but it can result in stalemates.

Question 2: Is Phineas' protect ongoing? I just got 14 heroes wrathed.

Phinehas, son of Eleazar (Pi)

Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Teal • Ability: 12 / 8 • Class: Warrior • Special Ability: Protect this Hero from capture and conversion. Protect Heroes in your territory and set-aside area from discard abilities.

It is an ongoing ability that continues while he remains in battle and is not interrupted or negated.  If all they played was Wrath of Stan and he was in battle, not negated or interrupted, only the heroes in battle can be discarded.

Phinehas had won a battle earlier in the game but was in territory when wrath was dropped.

It's only is active while he's in battle.

It's only is active while he's in battle.

Correct, reiterating that the protection is an ongoing ability while he remains in battle.  He does not say "While in play...", so his ability does not remain active after the battles he is in.

Redoubter and Chris are correct on all points.
