can i search deck for king david or king saul, not find one in deck, and put a king david or saul from hand into play to draw 2?

I don't think so, "it" references the hero pulled from the deck.

That is my take as well and how I've played it during testing and since.

The "and put it in play" is not a separate ability; it's part of the search ability that tells you where to put the searched card.
Use the Mad Bomber to rescue his Province.
