Title: I Am Sustainer vs Incurable
Post by: theselfevident on September 23, 2011, 03:21:18 AM
Is I Am Sustainer considered a heal card? What happens when its up against Incurable? Lets say that I Am Sustainer is not a heal card and I use Plagued with Diseases in conjunction with Face of Death while they are using I Am Sustainer are my opponent's heroes still discarded?

I Am Sustainer (AW)
Type: Covenant • Special Ability: Protect holder's Heroes from having their abilities reduced. Restore all of holder's Heroes to full abilities. • Play As: Protect holder's Heroes from having their abilities reduced. Heal all of holder's Heroes to full abilities.

Incurable (Pi)
Type: Curse • Special Ability: Protect Heroes in territories from healing. An opponent may discard two good Enhancements from hand to discard this card. • Play As: Protect Heroes in territories from heal abilities. An opponent may discard two good Enhancements from hand to discard this card.

Plagued with Diseases (Pi)
Type: Curse • Special Ability: Decrease all opponents’ Heroes by 0/2 (or 0/3 if you have the fewest Redeemed Souls). • Identifiers: OT, Disease

Face of Death (Ap)
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Brown • Special Ability: All Heroes currently poisoned or diseased are immediately discarded. • Play As: All Heroes in play currently poisoned or diseased are immediately discarded.

So I Am Sustainer is a Heal card and Incurable protects against it.

Incurable will protect against the "restore" part of I am Sustainer, but not against the "protect" part. So if IaS is active, PwD will not reduce the opponent's heroes even if Incurable is active. Therefore Face of Death will not discard them, because the heroes are not being affected by PwD.

What if I have used bad figs prior to them activating IaS, thus reducing abilities prior to the protect while having Incurable active? Does that mean the reduction will remain but not continue to reduce until IaS is deactivated?

Correct.

The "play-as" on IaS is actually errata, so it is to be disregarded. IaS is not a "heal" ability and Incurable does not protect from it. The only way I could see it being any differently is if "restored" is actually defined as the same as "heal."

In your scenario, my question is as follows, if using PwD vs IaS and then using Face of Death, the heroes are not healed and therefore still diseased just not reduced, would they be discarded?

That's a good question. I'd have to say that they are not, in fact, diseased because the disease is having no affect on them. But I could easily see an argument for the other side where one of the placed Diseases is on a Hero that's been Backwards Shadow'd seems to make it diseased even if the disease is having no effect.

ProfessorAlstad is correct. Restore is just another way of saying heal. It is not it's own special ability as Pol would suggest. In fact, I can't find any other card that uses "restore" in this way. I've added this clarification to the "Heal" document for the REG. I can't say how soon it will be published.
