How much time do I have per round/card?
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:08:16 AM »
0
1) If I search my deck for a card how much time do I have to complete my search?
2) If I search my deck and have 30 seconds per card but only use 15 seconds total does that time carry-over? Or is it a 30second per card, and if you do not use it all you still have X amount of time to finish your battle/turn.
3) How much time do I have per phase?
4) What is the maximum amount of time I have per turn to finish up everything?
5) How much time do I have to search my discard pile?
6) How much time do I have to search my opponent's deck?
7) How much time is in a type 2 2 player game? Is it an hour, or an hour and fifteen minutes? Or is it the hosts discretion?
These are all serious questions, if you do not have the exact answer please do not post anything like, I think this is it, I need the exact times. Thanks.

This information is all available in the Tournament Host Guide on Cactus' website.

1. From the time you played the search card to the time you play the next card in battle is 30 seconds. (pg 11)
2. No.  It is 30 seconds per card played.  (pg 12)
3. 90 seconds for the combination of intro/upkeep/prep, 30 seconds for each card during battle, 90 seconds for discard.  (pg 11)
4. See #3.
5. See #1, #6.
6. I have heard 30 seconds per 50 cards, but the guide doesn't say this, so I assume it really should be part of the 30 seconds between cards. Additional time can be allowed, but the word "may" is used, which means it isn't required or an absolute.  I'd ask the host/judge what they will use. (pg 12)
7. 1 hour, 30 minutes. (pg 7)

1) Its 30 seconds per 50 cards.
2) No, time doesn't carry over.
3) 90 seconds for Draw-Prep Phase 30 sec per card in Battle Phase 90 seconds for Discard Phase
4) However much time you use during battle phase + 3 Min.
5) Same as 1 30 sec. per 50 cards.
6) Same as 1 30 sec. per 50 cards.
7) 1 Hr. 30 Min.

Edit: Insta-Posted

Its also worth noting that it is up to the Hosts/Judge's discretion to determine if you're stalling. (I.E. Playing 40 False Peace's and claiming you get 10 Min per search even though everyone knows you're going for the next false peace) Stalling is not legal and the Host/Judge can tell you to finish your search.

I think he's asking in regards to a 500+ card deck.  If it's 30s per 50 cards, a single search would eat up a full 5 minutes.  I cannot find anything in the guide about 30 seconds per 50 cards, so I'd think he's actually limited to the 30 seconds if it wasn't for the bit on page 12.  5 minutes seems ridiculous, though.

The 30 seconds per 50 cards comes from the REG

Quote
There is a one-minute time limit for each 100 cards initially in the deck being searched.

REG - Instant Abilities - Search, Reveal, Exchange.

I posted it as 30 sec per 50 cards because its the same thing and thats what I'd heard.
It is ridiculous, so thats why the Host/Judge can tell him to finish searching at any time.

Then why are T2 games always 1 hour 15 min long if the limit is 1 hr 30 min?

What about shuffling.  Assuming a person pulls out the card they want in the given time, how much time is allowed for shuffling the recently searched 500 card deck?  It would seem that shuffling would actually take a LOT of time out of the game with a deck that size.

Huh, I just looked at the table on the guide, and a round for every type is 15 minutes longer than I've ever played. T12P have always been 45 minutes, T1MP have been an hour, T22P 1 hr 15 minutes, and T2MP 1 hr 30 minutes. Interesting...

That is because when you try to shove two sets of two rounds of categories in a day (or at worst try to run three sets of two categories in a full day) you have to shorten the rounds in order to make them fit.  At Nats you have all the time in the world so they run the full time.

Not at the last 3 nationals... they all ran the times Jordan posted.

Well they should run at those posted times because they have all day.

Right. Man, would I have loved an hour for T12P games when using Heroless. So much less stress...

Well they should run at those posted times because they have all day.

That would be great, as it would encourage a wider variety of decks, such as The Behemoth and more defensive decks as a whole!

Right. Man, would I have loved an hour for T12P games when using Heroless. So much less stress...

It would also have taken care of the stalling issue, for the most part.

I guess I always thought the 1 hour time for T1 2p included the 15 min break that is often scheduled into tournaments.

I'm assuming that must be the case. Also to allow for finishing up a round after time is called, which in some cases could take an extra 5-10 minutes.

Then why are T2 games always 1 hour 15 min long if the limit is 1 hr 30 min?

Because if you look at the Tournament Host's Guide, the times given are not the game times. They are estimates to allow the host to figure out when the tournament will finish. The guide assumes that there will be no more than 15 minutes of time will elapse from completion of the round of play until the next round of play begins. This time is used for scoring, creating new pairings, and shuffling.

This is the answer I received from Chris Bany at the MN state tournament this year. You may think I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone can seriously dispute the notion that Chris doesn't understand the whys and wherefores of tournament timings.

One other interesting thing I noted just now.

Quote from: Tournament Host's Guide
Set the number of rounds you will play for each category. The chart below shows our recommendations. State, regional, and national hosts must play the number of rounds listed.

It appears that playing more than the minimum number of rounds is a clear violation of the rules.

EmJayBee83 is correct. Those were not round times in the guide - they were estimates of how long to figure a tournament will take. We (as tournament hosts) typically assume a 15 minute break between rounds, hence a 45 minute round will take an hour before the next rounds starts. This is to provide the longest possible time for an event to take. However, that is a maximum. It always takes less time. In recent years, most tournaments (including nationals) have started the next round as soon as the previous one started.

I believe official time limits (in minutes) are:

Type 1 2-player      45
Type 1 Multiplayer   60
Type 2 2-player      75
Type 2 Multiplayer   90
Sealed 2-player      45
Sealed Multiplayer   60

I think there is an implied "at least" between the words "must" and "play".  So you MUST play that minimum number of rounds, but you MAY play more if desired.

I agree, may play more rounds should always be an option. If you have only 3 people in a category then you only need to play 1 round in multiplayer. However I think it is much more fun to play 2 rounds if the time allows, especially in states and higher.
