Title: How does protect and first strike interact?
Post by: Red on October 01, 2012, 07:50:52 PM
Gideon(6/6) who is protected from opponets card is blocked by The Goat with Horn(11/4 first strike). How does this pan out assuming no enhancements played?

First strike is a special ability that keeps a character from being defeated in a mutual destruction situation.  First strike would never come in to play.  The Goat with Horn would be discarded.

To clarify, since Gideon is protected, Goat's attack does nothing to Gideon. The only damage being done is Gideon's attack, which beats the Goat's defense. The Goat is losing by the numbers, so First Strike does not apply.

This thread has been reported for goats.

But seriously, first strike is one of the more confusing abilities. Is there a good reason it's structured the way it is? That is to say, why does whichever First Strike activated first take precedence rather than a FS on both sides canceling out? Also, I've never quite understood what would happen if, say, Claudia banded to Green Simon the Zealot and was blocked by Lot's Wife banded to Goat with Horn.

I think First Strikes on each side should cancel out, as for having some characters having it while others don't, I think it works like:

Check to see if first strike characters will win the battle, if they do first strike matters, otherwise ignore it.
