How do you use the REG?

Hey,

When I'm looking for something in the REG my preference is to have the PDF version of the REG and use Adobe's search abilities to find what I'm looking for.

I'm curious to know how other people do use the REG or how other people would like to use the REG.  What functionality of the REG do you find useful, what functionality do you find not useful, what functionality do you wish the REG had that it doesn't?

Tschow,

Tim "Sir Nobody" Maly

When I use it I either go straight to the card index or to the glossary for definitions.  Less often I go to the rulebook section.

I find the side bar of links to be very handy.  I don't like the way that a window pops open when you left click on a card name or term; I always right click to open the link in a new tab because it makes viewing and moving from one place to another within the REG easier than using the little pop-up window.
May you prosper greatly!

I use the online version, not the PDF, partly because it's more up-to-date, and partly because I'm often not at my home computer.

For a specific card, I look at the card entry and then do a global search on the card name to see where else it's mentioned (identifier lists, Special Conditions, etc). Since I used the online version, the search isn't very helpful - it does a search for ANY keywords, not ALL, and I don't think it did quoted phrases, so even a card like New Jerusalem would bring up every page with "new" and every page with "jerusalem" (most of which are not about New Jerusalem).

For a rule, I would rarely do a search unless I remembered some unique wording about it. Instead, I would read through the How to Use, Default Conditions, and Special Conditions for an ability type (the distinctions between the three sections rarely mattered, I would much rather one long page with all the info than three small pages each with some seemingly random portion of the info) for help. Occasionally I'd venture to the rulebook if I couldn't find it, and then at worst I'd do a global search. (The search results aren't always helpful, as so many of them are along the lines of "How to Use" without telling you the category. I'd like their titles to be something like "Capture > How to Use" for that.)

The glossary is helpful for identifiers, and they'd be even better if they were more up-to-date (musicians, etc.). I like that functionality as it is.

It's seemingly inconsistent what boxes are popped up and which redirect you to a new page. I middle-click as much as possible because of that, for some tab-splosion.

I would also like card entries for non-special ability cards - it's still nice to be able to click on Babylon and see it's a Red site from the "Babylonian sites" entry, or whatever, and see the card image and what identifiers it has (what exactly is Samuel?).

I'm about the same as the others.

I almost exclusively use it online.
Most often I just want to look up a card to see what it's SA is (and it would be nice if it popped up in a new tab).
I also think that having lists of identifiers is very helpful (although I know we're moving away from this).
I also would like the different sections like How to Use, Default Conditions, and Special Conditions to be combined.
Occasionally I use the glossary.

Something that could be nice to add would be some links to the forum.  If there has been a big discussion about something that leads to a new ruling, then there could be a link to that thread on the forum.  That would allow people to see the reasoning behind ruling changes.

I'm curious to know if popup cards are better or worse than new tabs for cards - I can produce either in the next version. I'll also be putting out a PDF version before end of year.

Popups are better if I'm just checking a card effect or if I'm copy/pasting the effect for a thread, but tabs are better for when I'm looking for cards to put in a deck as I can have multiples open at a time and can easily flip between them or close one if I decide not to use that specific card.

I use the card list often.  I use the definitions often.  I like the breakdown by ability although sometimes it's hard to find what I'm looking for that way.  The online rulebook is also very handy but I usually have to dig a lot to find what I want there too.  I don't find the search function very helpful but I wish it was.

As for pop ups vs. new tabs, I always right click and open things in a new tab.  I don't care for the pop ups but it's easy to work around.
