define plays

I've always understood 'play' to be laying down from the hand. so when the fortress from tin XI says "plays a evil character' does it mean laying him into the territory, or using him in battle.

I was overruled at the last tourny, because "play means use" so I'm just trying to clairify

I'm pretty sure it means to place into battle

Set asides are played, so it doesn't just mean battle.  I think played == placed into play, which includes territory & battle, etc.

I think it's placed in territory

well, since I am going to be a tourney host... ;)

No, I am just about 100% sure that that simply means laying them down.

There's not much from the glossary to help, but these definitions:

1. The phrase ‘played by’ refers to cards played directly on the holder’s character(s) in battle.
2. The phrase ‘played against’ refers to the character(s) in battle you are blocking or attacking.

Based on these definitions, I would rule that "play" would have to be in battle. You said you were overruled. What was the ruling - battle only or territory too?

You will still have to wait for more input from the experts.

I've always considered "Playing a card" to mean putting it into play.
Fortress Alstad
Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Any time you play a card from hand it is considered "played".  You  never can "play" cards into battle from territory.

So, the consensus for a definition:

Play: Place a card from hand into play.

Except that doesn't mean anything. Whatever the PTB decides on the hidden board is the definition.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!
