I have some play group members who struggle with the "Negate Protect Abilities" portion of the catds released in recent sets.

Protect

Protect allows cards to be unaffected by specified spe­cial abilities. (See Cannot be).

All of the following phrases are protect abilities:

Protect …

Is protected from …

Is prevented from being …

Cannot be …

May not be …

May only be … by

Must be … by

Immune to …

Ignores …

Notice that each of the abilities above does not prevent a special ability. They only limit the special ability to other targets.

Help me break down some examples in a way that may make me able to communicate the logic to my guys.

 Here is an example battle scenario.

Habakkuk v.s. Prince of this World.

Habakkuk (TP)

Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Green • Ability: 6 / 3 • Class: None • Special Ability: Negate all protect abilities on evil cards. After this battle, you may discard a warrior class Evil Character. Cannot be negated. • Identifiers: OT Male Human, Prophet • Verse: Habakkuk 3:1-2

Prince of this World (Pi)

Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Orange • Ability: 10 / 12 • Class: None • Special Ability: Immune to lone Heroes. • Identifiers: NT Male Demon • Verse: John 14:30

Is that quote from the new REG?

According to the new REG Immunity is a protect ability so Habakkuk would negate it

There is not an accompanying elder posting confirming the rule change, so it really should be treated as an error at this point and not an official change.

With something as big as this, yes I'd expect an actual post confirming the change.

Yep you got it right. Because Elders always supersede the REG which myself and many other players have stopped trusting lol

Did you miss that the new REG was just released? Like it actually happened? Not just a meme anymore but actually here and up to date.
