Healing when about to be discarded

Hey all,

I understand that when a hero loses by numbers, you can play a healing enhancement to prevent him from going to the discard pile.  The battle, however, will be over; the hero will return to your territory.  The evil character will win, he'll get his buddies together and party, gain an experience point, etc.

That's not the question.  The question is this:

What happens if the hero plays a healing enhancement for himself in regard to a discard ability?  Say, for instance, Wrath of Satan is played, and my David (Green) uses Ointment to prevent himself from being discarded?  Would the battle continue, or would David return to his (significantly emptier) territory while the evil character celebrated?

I'm just wondering because I've always played it where the battle continued, but recently I've been wondering if that is in fact the case.  Could I get some clarification?

Thanks,
Ian Vroon

 - The hero returns to territory when healed.

EX: You make a rescue attempt with David. Then your opponent blocks with King of Tyrus. Your David dies, but you play your healing enhancement Then David goes back to territory.

( I am pretty sure I am right, but I might not be!)

I believe healed characters always return to territory.

there may be a couple cards that heal and return the character to hand though...

Healed characters return to territory. They do not continue battling. Healing only changes the destination of the card, not the outcome of the battle. Wrath of Satan was never interrupted or negated.

So Ointment would work against King of Tyrus?  Sweet.  Is that because the battle is technically over, and thus KoT's special ability is no longer active?

Thanks for the help.  I see I was playing that wrong.
(Sound of healing enhancements flying out of multiple decks)
Oh well.  That makes more sense anyway.

Thanks and God bless,

This is correct. Healing enhancements can be played at any time before the end of your turn to heal any character that was discarded at any time during the turn. For instance, your opponent might discard your Joanna with Christian Martyr before the battle begins because they see you have TGT active. You then make a RA with Faithful Servant from hand. Your opponent blocks with KoT and wins the battle. Once KoT is brought back to your opponent's territory, his SA is no longer active. You can now play a healing enhancement to heal either Joanna or Faithful Servant.

It is important to note that Ointment cannot heal David if played on him while he is in battle with KoT.  KoT would negate the heal.

Does he still need a hero to play Ointment on?

Yes (if not played in battle). Healing enhancements must be activated on a character in play.

Yes. -

I have a question about team healing- Am I right that if my teamate has a hero that is about to be discarded, then if I dont have a hero I cannot play Brass Serp. ( promo) to heal my teamates hero?

That I do not know the answer to. Hopefully a TEAMS expert can comment. Where is Prof Underwood when you need him.  ;)

You can. You can even play a Healing enhancement to heal your opponent's Hero(es). From the REG:

Quote from: REG>Healing Cards
They may target any card being discarded or subject to a poison or disease special ability, regardless of brigade color.

Why is that right? The ability may target your opponent's card, but is there any reason you can play the enhancement on their character? I always thought you had to play it on your character.

I do think that you would have to have a character in play in order to play a healing enhancement.  However, if you had a hero in play, I agree with the "other Prof" that you could then use Brass Serpent to heal your teammate's character, or even your opponent's if you wanted.

I thought the question was whether you can play a healing enhancement off a teammate's character in play, or perhaps in Goshen.

I agree with the kittens that you can. The REG specifies "discarded from deck" as one of the potential targets of a healing enhancement, even if it was from the Upkeep Phase.

So I could Gates all of my Fishing Boated Disciples and then heal them to return them to territory.
And place them in Fishing Boat and place them beneath deck?
And go out for a rescue attempt, recur the Brass Serpant, Gates the disciples, heal them, and place them in territory?
And place them in Fishing Boat and place them beneath deck?
Grr... only 16 cards in hand rule...

Fishing Boat only allows you to put one disciple beneath deck, and only in the Upkeep Phase.

Source? I thought characters at bottom of deck went straight to discard pile, not able to be targetted for heal...

The REG default has always been "draw pile." You would need to provide a source for why "bottom of the draw pile" would differ from "top of the draw pile."

-------------------------------------------------

Instant Special Abilities > Restore Life, Heal, or Release > How to Use

Healing cards may be activated on any character in play (e.g., territory) of matching brigade color.  They may target any card being discarded or subject to a poison or disease special ability, regardless of brigade color.  The healing effect is instant, not delayed.  You can play a healing enhancement at any time to restore a character sent to the discard pile at any previous time during the turn (e.g., Draw Phase or Preparation Phase).  The discarded character may come from battle, a territory, a set-aside area, or from a draw pile.  Cards being discarded can be healed on the way to the discard pile.  Cards being discarded from anywhere may be healed at any point during that turn.  Characters discarded on a previous turn cannot be healed.  A healed card is immediately placed in the owner’s territory; they retain all their abilities.
