can a player heal a hero discarded from set-aside with a healing card? for instance, brass serpent to heal heroes discarded from darius' decree?

Yeah, but you have to wait for the phase to fizzle because dd's no playing enhancements without ecs is still active. Not that it matters, when you play it the phase is assumed to fizzle.

You can't heal somebody after the phase is done, can you?

The answer to your question and MKC's question are both "yes."

Instant Special Abilities > Restore Life, Heal, or Release > How to Use
Healing cards may be activated on any character in play (e.g., territory) of matching brigade color. They may target any card being discarded or subject to a poison or disease special ability, regardless of brigade color. The healing effect is instant, not delayed. You can play a healing enhancement at any time to restore a character sent to the discard pile at any previous time during the turn (e.g., Draw Phase or Preparation Phase). The discarded character may come from battle, a territory, a set-aside area, or from a draw pile. Cards being discarded can be healed on the way to the discard pile. Cards being discarded from anywhere may be healed at any point during that turn. Characters discarded on a previous turn cannot be healed. A healed card is immediately placed in the owner’s territory; they retain all their abilities.

Just to expand on this, if you use Darius Decree during the Discard Phase then healing cards won't be able to be played because the next phase will no longer be on the same turn.

Can you play a healing card out of battle when it is not your turn? If not, does that mean that Torment only heals an EC that someone is discarding from my territory or in a side battle while it is my turn? That would make Torment pretty useless.

you can use healing enhancements not on your own turn, but he just means it will be impossible to heal heroes during the discard phase due to dd's first ability, which is still in effect for the current phase regardless if dd is discarded.

My question was more of an epiphany for me. I have never used a good healing enhancement when it was not my turn, yet I have always used Torment when it was not my turn. I'm not sure why I never noticed the cross-over.

I am pretty sure he was implying that you cannot heal the heroes ever because it is across turns. I don't see any reason why you can't, the heroes are still being discarded and like you set you can play healing enhancements on someone elses turn.

You can only heal characters the turn they are discarded. If DD is discarded during the discard phase to get rid of heroes in set aside, they cannot be healed ever because DD's restrict is active until the end of the discard phase and after that it is not the same turn any longer. That's what he was saying, and that is indeed the case.

Okay, yeah that's right. It wouldn't make sense to have a thad in the discard pile for 20 turns and then be brought back to life when they pulled brass serpent.
