Healing of Naaman

I have always used this card as my heroless convert card of choice, but I remember in the past something about not being able to use it unless being discarded.  If this is true, it doesn't make any sense.  You don't have to heal to convert, it simply says to do x and y.  If you can't do x then you still do y.

On another note, can you heal an EC from nothing?  Reading the description, I don't see why not.  However, the new REG (not official) says you cannot heal from nothing.

Even if the current rule is that you cannot heal from nothing, it seems it would still work as the ability does not require the heal to convert. ("and" ability vs "to" ability)

Healing of Naaman
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Grey • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Heal your human Evil Character and convert it to a Hero in the brigade of your choice. • Identifiers: OT, Depicts a Weapon • Verse: II Kings 5:14 • Availability: Faith of Fathers (Set 9)

Healing
A healing enhancement is an enhancement with “heal” in its special ability. Healing abilities cure characters that have been poisoned, infected or are in the process of being discarded. They are played following a battle phase or anytime during a turn. The card is put to use when placed in the Field of Play with a character of a matching brigade.

If you use it outside of battle, you have to actually be healing something (poison, disease, discard). If you use it in battle, you don't have to be infected to convert.

This doesn't seem to indicate that healing abilities have to be played when you are being discarded. Also, Healing of Namaan is not a "to" ability, it is an "and" ability, the second part of which activates whenever the first part does. So I say, you should be able to play Healing of Namaan any time to just convert your EC.

So there.

Why this distinction?  I can't find any rules that change how a healing card works if in or out of battle.  Like I and BB said, it is an "and" ability not a "to" ability.  If a card said "draw a card and convert a EC" you could still convert if you had decked out.

If you're not healing, then you're not using it as a healing card, so you can't use it outside of battle.

But I'm still playing a healing card which by REG definitely is simply a card with "heal".

And the rulebook says that the qualification for playing outside of battle is a "healing ehn".
You may play a healing enhancement at any time and its SA activates even if played outside of battle

I guess literally, nitpickily, you're right, but that goes against the spirit of what healing enhancements are/do.

You could bandage up your leg regardless of whether it was bleeding, couldn't you? You don't have to be poisoned or diseased or dying to be healed.

I think you can play healing cards at any time, like the REG says.

Hey,

You can only heal a character that is poisoned, diseased, being discarded, or was discarded at some previous point during the current turn.

Cards with the ability to heal and do something else, must perform the heal in order to perform the other ability (despite these cards not being written with the typical cost/benefit verbiage).

These rules may not be clear in the current REG, but they should be clearer in the new REG.

Tschow,

Tim "Sir Nobody" Maly
