If a card is cannot be prevented, can my opponent play a card to negate it?

Yes. Cannot be prevented abilities still work if a negate is already in place (such as a "battle is determined by the numbers" ability), but they can be negated or interrupted after they are played.

Here's how I remember it:

Cannot be prevented means nothing played before the CBP card stops it.

Cannot be interrupted means nothing played after the CBI card stops it.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

That's what I was told but it doesn't make sense to me why it cannot be prevented by a card that has already been played but can be prevented by a card after it was played.

It's not being prevented after it's played. Negate is different than prevent (though some older cards say "interrupt and prevent" which has been decided to be the same as "negate"). It's kind of confusing, but if you just think of negate as separate but similar to interrupt/prevent, then it sorta helps.

To further exacerbate the problem, Flaming Sword (Wa) was used to stop the CBP, which says "interrupt and prevent"

No, but you can prevent it.  The whole issue is Negate no longer equals interrupt and prevent.  It behaves like interrupt and prevent most of the time, but in regards to CBI and CBP it behaves differently.  Like it has been said a CBP can only be negated or interrupted, and CBI can only be prevented, but not negated or interrupted.  I know it feels incorrect but we have already had this debate repeatedly.  It may not make "sense" but it is what it is.  Someday, when the new REG comes out (right after the return of Christ), it will be better explained what negate is, to help people understand.

TL DR;

CBI can only be stopped before playing
CBP can only be stopped after playing
This not likely to change.

Hope this helped.

Not trying to rehash the debate, just trying to explain. Does FbtN cards prevent CBI?

yes.  FBTN is basically preventing CBI cards from taking effect.

Yep, because the CBI ability activated before the negate.

"interrupt + prevent" in a card ability = negate but an interrupt ability paired with a prevent ability on another card does not, right?

So in that case the prevent will still stop the CBP card if it is played after it.  The CBP ability doesn't really have anything to do with the prevent ability.  It just means it can't be stopped by cards played before it.

Exactly!  It would be silly to use actual English definitions appropriately.  Kinda reminds me of all the code words I used in my childhood fort for silly things like girls and such.
