i make a rescue attempt against my opponent with a hero. my opponent blocks with the rabsaris, and plays the rabsaris attacks to discard my hero in battle. am i then allowed to play grapes of wrath to discard the rabsaris, and potentially make another rescue attempt? additionally, would this also work if my opponent played any other card that discarded/removed my hero, such as christian martyr or unholy writ?

Yes. I believe that is the primary reason Grapes was created.

Correct.  Grapes never stops the discard from happening.

So since Warrior's Spear "works" on Spy when he withdraws, could I play Grapes after I withdraw Spy?

I don't think he was implying that. I read his question as being the "good" equivalent to playing Unknown Nation after AoCp - the fact that you just lost your characters in battle does not mean that the battle is over. In Grapes' case, your opponent may have won the battle, but he won't win the war!  :o

There would have to be an evil card in battle for Grapes to work. If you withdraw Spy, the blocker never enters battle.

wait, I don't think it works that way (or at least, it shouldn't work that way). I believe you're attacked, you're allowed to play a dominant, but when you're attacking, you don't get that opportunity.

The way I understand it is: When attacking you have to ask to play first card, if you are losing, then you can play a dominant or whatever.

I don't understand. As long as a character is in battle, you should be allowed to play a dominant.

i.e. You AotL my EC, I can still CM your hero, or vice versa.

You can play a dominant at ANY time, as long as the conditions on the card are met.

"Opportune" is an understatement!  I don't really call it retirement, though.  It's more of a new beginning.

Did you really just give you retirement a "Play-As?"
