The hero definitely did not win, since he didn't win a soul or make a successful battle challenge. Likewise, the evil character did not make a successful block, since it got discarded, and it was not the card that got rid of the hero(es) in battle, thus, it did not win the battle either.

The character making a successful block and the player making a successful block are different. DoU played on Assyrian Survivor triggers AS' ability, which means that he was defeated, which means AS didn't make a successful block, even if the player did (barring a HT).
