Grapes of Wrath and battle resolution

Player 1 RAs with a high-numbered hero.
Player 2 blocks with a low-numbered EC and plays a card that targets the hero (say, a discard).
It is now Player 1's initiative, but he doesn't have a card that can negate Player 2's discard.

Can Player 1 play Grapes of Wrath to discard the EC and start a new rescue attempt (assuming he fulfills the lost soul requirement on GoW)?

I'm unsure of the order-of-operations in battle resolution, but it seems like Player 1 could use his initiative to play Angel of the Lord on the EC at that point. The hero would be discarded, the EC would be discarded, and the battle would end. Similarly, it seems like he could play GoW, discard the EC, lose his hero, and then start a new rescue attempt. I might have the order of battle resolution totally backwards, though.

1.   CARD NAME:  Grapes of Wrath [new]
CARD TYPE: Good Dominant
CLASS:
IDENTIFIERS:
STATS:
BRIGADE COLOR:
SPECIAL ABILITY: Discard an evil card in battle to shuffle all remaining characters in battle into owners’ decks.  If the current rescuer doesn't have the most Redeemed Souls, he may begin a new battle.
SCRIPTURE: And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Revelation 19:15

You could play the dominant, but only after the Enhancement completed it's Special Ability.

Okay, right. So to try and rephrase the question better: after the enhancement completes its special ability, does the battle end or do I still have time to play GoW?

If a hero captures an evil character in battle, doesn't the defender get a chance to play CM?

I believe you could, as if you discard the only EC in battle they can still CM you, or use Unknown Nation to block again, etc, so I don't see why this shouldn't apply for rescuers as well :)

I believe your hero would still be discarded though.
