Player 1 RAs with a high-numbered hero.
Player 2 blocks with a low-numbered EC and plays a card that targets the hero (say, a discard).
It is now Player 1's initiative, but he doesn't have a card that can negate Player 2's discard.
Can Player 1 play Grapes of Wrath to discard the EC and start a new rescue attempt (assuming he fulfills the lost soul requirement on GoW)?
I'm unsure of the order-of-operations in battle resolution, but it seems like Player 1 could use his initiative to play Angel of the Lord on the EC at that point. The hero would be discarded, the EC would be discarded, and the battle would end. Similarly, it seems like he could play GoW, discard the EC, lose his hero, and then start a new rescue attempt. I might have the order of battle resolution totally backwards, though.
