Pliny is convinced Nero was a magician. Enough?

Source? I'm all for arguing the point if it can be reasonably sourced. Since the reference for Nero is extra-biblical, I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to use extra-biblical evidence for any other identifiers for him.

Most likely Pliny is the source.  Pliny the Younger was a Roman historian during the 1st century.  He is akin to Josephus (except that Josephus was Jewish).

I got that from Pol's quote. I was hoping someone could point out where Pliny said he believed Nero to be a magician.

As long as charms doesn't work on him, I'd be all for it.

Oh, okay.  I wasn't trying to insult anyone's intelligence, and just trying to be helpful.  With 2 of the 3 posts above questioning what Pol was talking about...I assumed others must be wondering as well and volunteered the info.

My class has not made me read Pliny, so only Pol can probably help with the actual quoting of Pliny.

Doing a quick Google search, I found a few links that said Nero never successfully practiced magic, though he was very into magicians and attempting to become one for a significant portion of his life:

http://www.espr-archeologia.it/articles/251/Nero-and-the-magic

http://books.google.com/books?id=30Wa-l9B5IoC&pg=PA227&lpg=PA227&dq=pliny+nero+magician&source=bl&ots=nw3fglYZqq&sig=uv7NO8QWK3VwYrcXnG-qjakVxhc&hl=en&ei=a-OQTO3mMJnfnQfCiZ20DA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=false

http://home.earthlink.net/~xristos/GoldenDawn/arbatel.htm

"Pliny expresses a rather an interesting concept when he states that those sorcerers who had written down their spells and recipes despised and hated humanity (for spreading their lies perhaps?). To show this Pliny link arts of the magicians of Rome with the emperor Nero (who of course is often portrayed negatively), whom Pliny claims had studied magic with the best teachers and had access to the best books, but was unable to do anything extraordinary."

What is Redemption's definition of a Magician? Does it say anything about them being very good?
