Title: Goliath and the I/J Spears

You may discard this card to underdeck/discard a Hero.

Return all Heroes in battle to territory (except giant-slayers). Opponent may present a new Hero. Negate all band, draw, and play abilities. Cannot be negated.


If Goliath is holding one of the new spears, does the spear activate before or after a new hero is presented?

After. Character effects happen before the weapons do.

It becomes a total mind game.

Will he use the spear? Should I just send a hero to die? Should I try to negate the spear?

Oh that will be so much fun to watch them guess my plans.

I'm afraid you are incorrect in this case.

Quote from: REG.Glossary.Special Abilities

When a single card has more than one special ability (including gained abilities), perform the abilities in this order:

• First, complete all special abilities in the order written on the card except those that add a character to the battle. Note that some special abilities can happen together even though they may be separated by a period. Second, if the card is a character with either a gained ability or a weapon-class enhancement, then activate the gained abilities in the order gained. Finally, activate the special abilities on the carried weapon-class enhancement.
• Complete banding abilities.
• Complete any Choose Blocker or Rescuer abilities.

Goliath's ability to replace the rescuer would fall under choose the rescuer on that list.  So the spear would activate before the present a new hero ability does.

If you're looking for ways to get rid of banded heroes and then use the spear on the lone remaining hero you might want to consider Twelve-fingered Giant or Herod the Great with Herod's Treachery as alternatives.
