Forced Withdraw

Okay, I never really understood how cards like Darkness work.

Darkness (Warriors)
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Pale Green • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: All Heroes in battle lose their way and withdraw. Opponent must present a new Hero or rescue attempt fails. • Play As: All Heroes withdraw from battle. Opponent must present one new Hero or rescue attempt fails.

If I use that, or a good enhancement that forces the evil character(s) to withdraw in a similar manner, what happens after that? I know that the character(s) that withdraw cannot be put back in that battle, but what are the guidelines for what CAN be put in battle at that time?

Nothing else.  You only "present" an Evil Character one time during the battle.  The only way you can bring others in is with a "band" or "add to battle".  Additionally, some cards give you the option to present a new blocker in place of the old (e.g. Lion Dwelling with the Calf), and some let the rescuer choose the blocker, and that replaces an old one with a new one.

So, in the case of Darkness above, unless they negate it the rescuer loses the battle?

But Darkness has the ability, "Opponent must present a new Hero or rescue attempt fails." That falls under that category of cards that allow a new blocker (/rescuer)

So, in the case of Darkness above, unless they negate it the rescuer loses the battle?

Darkness allows your opponent to add a different hero to the battle in order to continue the rescue. The hero would have to be one that they control.

Can they play one from hand, or must it be in their territory?

To my knowledge, you can present your new character under the same rules as presenting your old character (typically meaning also from hand).  Only thing is that none of your characters that were pushed out are allowed to come back in.

Ok, so when a character gets pushed out of battle the owner gets a chance to put any new (not that got pushed back) character into battle to replace the pushed one. I think I get it. The only way it would be a guarantee win is if they had no other characters that fit.

Only if the card says so.

Only if the card says so.
What is the wording for "says so"? Darkness says "Opponent must present a new Hero or rescue attempt fails" so does that count?

My question was specifically about cards that say something like "Blocking evil character refuses to block. Opponent must present a new Evil Character or rescue attempt succeeds." or like what Darkness says above. Obviously, if a card just says "hero withdraws from battle" they wouldn't get to put in another one. I'm wondering what exactly happens when Darkness or a good equivalent is played.

Yes.  That is the language that says you can present a new blocker.  Herod's Treachery, which just says you withdraw, does not.

Ok, I get it now. Thanks!
