Feedback Welcome - Fixing Heal Abilities

Many players have brought up concerns this year about healing. We've heard those concerns and spent a great deal of time trying to decide the best way to keep healing functional without having weird stuff (like going back in time, requiring a search, etc). We believe the following changes will accomplish the goal.

These are some basic things we want to accomplish with these changes:

1. Heal should not go back in time.
2. Heal should restore fully (including weapons, placed cards, experience credit, etc.) as it does now.
3. Heal should not search discard pile, because characters should not reach discard pile.
4. If a character is Healed in battle, they are still put in territory (not a Withdraw).
5. Players should still be able to Heal during another player's turn.

Quote
Heal
A heal ability can be used to remove the effects of a discard or an ability paired to a poison, disease, or paralyze ability. A heal ability can only target a character.

How to Play

When a character is healed, it is no longer poisoned, diseased, or paralyzed. Any ongoing effects tied to any of those conditions end immediately.

When a character is healed, any decrease of the character’s abilities is removed.

When a character is being discarded by a special ability, or by a game rule that has been triggered by a special ability, after special initiative is complete, its controller has initiative to use a heal ability before the discard completes.  When this occurs, suspend the card causing the discard, additional abilities waiting to activate, and any triggers (currently active ongoing abilities remain active).  The character’s controller may play an enhancement or activate an ability to heal the character being discarded.  The enhancement played or ability activated must be able to heal the character being discarded.

A character to be discarded as a result of Battle Resolution can be healed (see Battle Resolution in the glossary).

When a character is healed from being discarded, it is placed in the territory of the player with permanent control, and the discard is not considered to have completed for the purposes of abilities or conditions that trigger based on a character or card being discarded.

A player has the option to play a healing enhancement during the preparation phase and the discard phase of any player, provided there is a character that is healable.

A healing enhancement played from hand must be played on a character of matching brigade, either in territory or a character currently being discarded.
Heal abilities target the characters that are to be healed.

All heal abilities are instantaneous.

Default Conditions

● A character is “healable” if it is being discarded, is poisoned, is diseased, or is paralyzed. If no other requirement is specified, targets must be “healable”.
● Characters cannot be healed once they are placed in a discard pile.

Special Conditions

● The ability to use healing cards outside of battle does not apply to characters with heal abilities, unless the character is Territory Class. The heal ability on a character without Territory Class can only be activated in battle.

Clarifications

● “Restore abilities” means “heal”.

Quote
Battle Resolution

As is described in Battle Resolution in the rulebook, there are four outcomes to a battle:

● Evil Character wins
● Hero wins
● Mutual destruction
● Stalemate

However, beyond the outcome of the battle you must also determine the outcomes of the battle challenge or rescue attempt. Here is the order to follow:

1. Determine the outcome of the battle (Evil Character(s) wins, Hero(es) wins, mutual destruction, or stalemate).

2. Determine success or failure of the rescue attempt or battle challenge. If the battle was a battle challenge, then success or failure of a battle challenge has only one condition, the battle outcome in step 1. If Hero wins and has (or has gained) access to a Lost Soul, it’s a successful rescue. If Hero loses battle or loses access to opponent’s Lost Souls, then the rescue fails.

3. Resolve end-of-battle special ability based on the conditions established in Steps 1 and 2. All unaffected cards are treated under normal gameplay rules (such as discard, return to territory, Land of Redemption, etc).

4. Discard and/or return characters based on the battle outcome in step 1.  Characters that would not be discarded as a result of the battle outcome are returned to the territory of the player with permanent control.  Characters that would be discarded may be healed by the controlling player before the discard occurs.

We welcome your feedback and questions about how this might impact the game we all enjoy.

Very much in favour. I'm sure this will make just about everyone happy. No searching, no withdraw. And it is more accurate to actual healing, in that the characters aren't discarded.

Excellent work. I don't have any concerns at all with how it turned out.

The first post in this thread has the current 'final' version, here is the 'change log' for those who want to see what specifically would change (strike-through means removed, bold means added):

Quote
Heal
A heal ability can be used to remove the effects of a discard or an ability paired to a poison, disease, or paralyze ability. A heal ability can only target a character.
How to Play
If a character was discarded earlier in the turn, a heal ability must be able to target or be played on that character as it existed prior to being discarded (the character type and brigade it had prior to being discarded), not as it is at face value in discard pile. When it is healed, it moves to its owner’s territory and regains any abilities or effects that were lost upon returning to face value in the discard pile. Any cards that had been placed on or held by a character when it was discarded are returned as previously placed on or held by the character being healed.
When a character is healed, it is no longer poisoned, diseased, or paralyzed. Any ongoing effects tied to any of those conditions end immediately.
When a character is healed, any decrease of the character’s abilities is removed.
When a character is being discarded by a special ability, or by a game rule that has been triggered by a special ability, after special initiative is complete its controller has initiative to use a heal ability before the discard completes.

A healing enhancement played from hand in this way must be played on a character of matching brigade in territory or on a character currently being discarded. one of two ways:
Heal abilities target the characters that are to be healed.
All heal abilities are instantaneous.

Enhancements with Heal Abilities
Healing enhancements can be played in battle (during the battle phase) or outside of battle.
When played during the battle phase they must be played according to initiative.
 (1) on a character in the holder's territory
(2) on a character in the holder's discard pile (if the character was discarded in the same turn). Both result in that character being healed. Healing cards played on a character in a discard pile must target the same character and must be able to be played on that character as it existed prior to being discarded (the character type and brigade it had prior to being discarded), not as it is at face value in discard pile.

Default Conditions
● A character is “healable” if it is being was discarded earlier in the same turn, is poisoned, is diseased, or is paralyzed. If no more specific other requirement is specified, targets must be “healable”.
● Characters cannot be healed once they are placed in a discard pile. discarded from hands or decks cannot be targeted by heal cards.
Special Conditions
● The ability to use healing cards outside of battle does not apply to characters with heal abilities, unless the character is Territory Class. The heal ability on a character without Territory Class can only be activated in battle.
● A heal ability that targets a card in a discard pile includes a search of the pile for the target.
Clarifications
● The phrase “being discarded”, “about to be discarded” or “recently discarded” (recently meaning previously in the same turn) all refer to a character that has been discarded by a special ability or game rule.
● “Restore abilities” means “heal”.

Thanks for sharing that, Dayne. That's what I meant to share but it was late and I messed up.

Well I know that I have NEVER forgotten something in a post after midnight

On a side note, my favorite part of this is that all the old Heal cards with "about to be discarded" make sense after many years of the rules having a clause about them not meaning that ;)
