I had an idea while reading the thread about add to hand vs drawing.

We all agree that if Evil Spawn reveals an evil character and adds it to battle, that's considered banding right? However, he can also add enhancements to battle, which is not banding.

What happens if Wool Fleece is active? Can you target his ability as a band before it activates, or does it become a banding ability after it has activated?

Wool Fleece (Pa)
Type: Artifact • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: No Evil Characters may band • Play As: Evil Characters are prevented from banding. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Judges 6:36-38 • Availability: Patriarchs booster packs (Rare)

Evil Spawn (Pi)
Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Orange • Ability: 4 / 5 • Class: None • Special Ability: Reveal the bottom card of draw pile. If it is an evil card, take it into hand or add it to the battle. • Play As: Reveal the bottom card of your deck. If it is an evil card, place it in your hand or band it into battle. • Identifiers: Generic NT Male Demon • Verse: John 8:44 • Availability: Priests booster packs (Common)

I would think you could still use Evil Spawn's ability as Wool Fleece would not stop you from adding the evil character to hand if that's what is revealed. Not 100% sure, though.

I would say if Wool Fleece is up Evil Spawn would reveal the bottom card of deck and if its an enhancement he could add it to battle but if its a character I would say he couldn't add it to battle because that would be banding.

Evil Spawn just can't add an evil character to his side of the battle.

While that's true, when you get into the mechanics of why it's true you run into a LOT of difficulty. A prevent only targets abilities, and only before they happen. If his "banding" abilities are being prevented before they happen, why isn't his "play an enhancement" ability also being precvented?

Here's an example - hopefully it makes sense outside my head   ;D

Evil Spawn reveals the bottom card of his deck while Wool Fleece is up. The revealed card is:
A. A good card. It is replaced and the battle continues.
B. An evil enhancement. It can be picked up into players hand or played into battle.
C. An evil character. The character attempts to band into battle, but is prevented by WF. Therefore, the character must be picked up into hand.

I know this is essentially just what everyone is saying, but (to me at least) it seems like an answer to your question.

The problem is, WS has a reveal ability and an add to battle ability, not a reveal ability and a play a card ability and a banding ability.

The add to battle ability will sometimes function as a banding ability, but that is not determined until after the ability has already carried out, when it is too late to prevent.

This is a very sticky situation that will hopefully result in add to battle abilities always being add to battle abilities, separate from banding or play.
