Esau should be Syrian, because he has Syrian descent on his Mother's side (Rebekah is Laban's sister) and on his father's, because Isaac was related to Laban's father, who would have been his uncle. See Genesis 23: 15-29.

Not, of course, that it would change much.

Damascus could search him out and recur him. That is substantial.

Nvm they have to be a gray Syrian.

It won't change much now (except I guess he'd get protection under House of Rimmon), but if a new Esau got printed that fit better with the theme (even tangentially) then it could be interesting.

I can certainly see it that way, but I'm not sure if that is necessarily the case either. As far as I know, Esau wasn't born in Aram/Syria, and never lived there for any amount of time. I agree that descent can play a role in determining nationality, but there also has to be a line drawn somewhere, otherwise every Israelite and Judean King from Saul to Zedekiah could be Syrian (in addition to almost any O.T. Hero) since they are all descended from Rebekah through Jacob.

Technically, he'd be Chaldean, since Syrian wasn't really a cultural identifier yet.
