Every Man's Sword

I just found out from the REG that there's an errata on this card that is HUGELY different from the printed ability.

Special Ability: No battle may begin as a battle challenge.
Errata: Protect each player without a Lost Soul in territory from being attacked.

I'm not one to argue against something like this, but could I get an explanation as to why this change was made?  It's just kind of disappointing that this card's ability has been so severely limited.
Epic pouting maneuver!

As printed, the card doesn't do anything under the current rule set.

A battle is not considered "begun" until all the special abilties on heroes and weapons have completed.  At that moment it is considered either a rescue attempt or battle challenge.  So at that point, it is too late to prevent the battle challenge.  You'd already have discarded with Gabriel or Amasai, or revealed with Seeker, etc.  So EMS really does nothing as printed.

We had to give it something to do that was at least similar in function to what was intended when it was printed.  So we came up with what you see in the REG.  At least it stops Seeker.  :)

But with that errata, you can still attack with an OT hero if the opponent has only the NT LS in his territory?
Use the Mad Bomber to rescue his Province.

Yes, but that OT hero might have the ability to negate the special ability on the Lost Soul (see Abraham).  Regardless, though, the opponent gets to attack as long as you have a lost soul out.

That is dumb.  I think it should be chaged to acccess.  This would stop hur and seeker from producing LS's even if they dont have access to sites or to a LS with a special ability.  I think that this eratta would be a truer version of its original ability.

Errata: Protect each player from a battle challenge.  Attacker must have access due to Special Ability, Artifact or Site before they enter battle.

This makes this card much more usable and, in my opinion, truer to its original intent.

You can't have access before you enter battle.

Yes, but there must be some way to prevent people from doing the things that they do with hur or seeker even if they dont have access to a current LS.

as of right now, EMS is used far less than it was intended to be used.

Actually it's not used at all since the errata.  At least the only person I've seen play it didn't know about the change.  There are simply better choices for Artifacts.  EMS was a specialized card for site decks in the past.

The change is for the best though.  I'd rather see one card "die" and have consistent rules. :)

Why is it that people named "Matt" always take longer to accept this ruling?  :)

One of my later games at Nationals was against someone using Every Man's Sword. He didn't draw Lost Souls for many turns. My Simeon was very sad. I live and breathe because of Simeon battle challenges. Without that, what am I?

I dunno,

For me it is because this was my very first deck.  It was a gold site lockout deck with eli to drag out my EMS and seal the deal.  I won ALOT of tournaments with that deck before EMS was ruled against me.

ever since I have been trying to sneak it back into some semblance of usability.

as it stands right now, EMS stands just above the warriors version of Rams Horn in the usability department

It's one of those cards that make me wish we could still just make some "just because" rulings on a few of these cards.  Everyone knows what it's SUPPOSED to do, but gameplay mechanics killed it.

Hmm, either you are teasing me or you have secret knowledge that the rest of us arent privy too.

dont tease  me about EMS.

'cause if it worked the way it was SUPPOSE to work, then it would make site lockout decks one of the most powerful decks
